With all the uncertainties facing business at this time, there will be a reluctance to commit to more permanent employees than absolutely necessary. That, in turn, could lead employers to move to engaging at least some of their workforces on an ‘as needed’ basis. Although there may be legal impediments to this, there is likely to be pressure to enable employers to be more flexible, for fear they may go out of business otherwise. The rapid increase in the adoption of technology to support working remotely is also helping to create the conditions for companies to move more toward a ‘gig workforce’.
